Spreadsheet Budgeting

Budget like a spreadsheet. Without the spreadsheet.

Edit your entire budget in a familiar grid layout. Import via CSV, copy from last month, pull from last year, or apply to all future months.

The speed of a spreadsheet, the power of an app

For people who love spreadsheets but want their budget to actually do something.

Many people start budgeting in a spreadsheet because it is fast and flexible. The problem is that spreadsheets do not connect to your bank, do not categorize your transactions, and do not tell you when you are over budget. FreeBudget gives you the best of both worlds.

The spreadsheet view lets you see and edit your entire budget in a grid. Categories run down the left side. Months run across the top. Click any cell to change the amount and tab to the next one. It is the same workflow you already know, except your budget actually tracks your spending in real time.

Already have your budget in Excel or Google Sheets? Import it via CSV and skip the manual setup entirely. Or use the built-in quick actions: copy from last month, pull in last year's numbers as a starting point, or set your budget once and apply it to every remaining month in the year. These shortcuts turn a 30-minute setup into a 30-second one.

This is especially useful for fixed expenses like rent, car payments, and subscriptions. Set them once, copy to all future months, and never think about them again. Then spend your time fine-tuning the variable categories where your spending actually changes.

Frequently asked questions

How does the spreadsheet budget view work?

The spreadsheet view displays your budget in a grid with categories as rows and months as columns. You can click into any cell to edit the amount, tab between cells, and see your totals update in real time. It is designed for people who are comfortable with spreadsheets and want to work quickly.

What quick actions are available?

FreeBudget offers three quick actions to save you time: "Copy from Last Month" pulls your previous month's budget into the current month so you do not have to re-enter amounts. "Copy from Last Year" pulls in the budget from the same month in the prior year, which is useful for seasonal planning. "Copy to All Future Months" takes your current month's budget and applies it to every remaining month in the year, perfect for fixed expenses like rent or subscriptions.

Can I import my budget from a CSV file?

Yes. If you already have your budget amounts in a spreadsheet, you can export it as a CSV and import it directly into FreeBudget. This is the fastest way to get started if you are migrating from another tool or have been tracking your budget in Excel or Google Sheets.

How is this different from budgeting in a regular spreadsheet?

The grid looks and feels like a spreadsheet, but your budget is connected to your actual spending. Transactions sync from your bank or CSV imports, are automatically categorized, and your actual spending is tracked against your budget in real time. A regular spreadsheet cannot do any of that.
